Natural Gas and Electricity

Background

Remote site security and environmental monitoring with EPIC iO

A California agency providing natural gas and electric utility services to more than 16 million people across 70,000 square miles in Northern and Central California was challenged in gaining full visibility into the utilization, collection capacity and security of 20 wet and dry spoils sites used to collect solid debris and waste water.

The public utility agency is using EPIC iO remote surveillance trailers equipped with DeepInsights™ technology that includes dome cameras and UIGs™ (Universal IoT Gateways) with AI to provide security monitoring and collect information about site utilization and capacity.

Once the data is collected by DeepInsights platform, it is transmitted from the edge devices (dome cameras and AIoT sensors) to the cloud where it can then be analyzed and monitored for trends. With this data, the utility agency is able to predict any problems or potential equipment failures, which enables it to implement preventative measures to maximize the facility’s uptime.

The utility agency also uses DeepInsights to monitor and security detect any suspicious activity happening within the perimeter of the spoils sites. Through integrated LED strobe lights, visual warnings alert of a potential crime in progress, and through two-way communication which includes a “voice down” feature, the agency is able to send an audible message and provide an immediate response that can also serve as a deterrent to potential crime in progress and ward off any illegal activity.

Further, unlike other remote security platforms which can have dozens of false alarms between dusk and dawn, often caused by changes in the moonlight, wind, leaves, rain and animals, DeepInsights’ AI-driven technology dramatically reduces false alarm instances.

The Challenge

Regulated utility service

20 wet and dry spoils collection sites spread across 70,000 square miles

Need for greater visibility into the spoils collection sites to monitor utilization, collection capacity and security of containers housing solid debris and waste water

The Solution

Integrate EPIC iO DeepInsights™, an open and extendable AIoT platform featuring out-of-the-box AI, IoT sensors, and cameras

Deploy UIGs (Universal IoT Gateways) to all remote spoils sites

Utilize 4G/LTE for data communication integrated with Cradlepoint’s cloud-managed IoT routers - Delivering ultra- reliable and secure 4G LTE and 5G cellular connectivity

IntelliCare Platinum Security-level monitoring services with active monitoring by IntelliSite® live agents who have the ability to conduct remote voice-downs via loudspeakers to deter crime and illegal activities
